Brussels
1880 – 1881
Vincent sought out contact with other artists and took classes at the Brussels Academy, which he found overly dogmatic. He became friends with the painter Anthon van Rappard, with whom he shared a studio. After a time, though, he decided to leave the city and return to the countryside, in order to develop his art in complete tranquillity and depict the simple farming life. He considered going to Kalmthout, but in the end he opted to move back to his parents’ house. They had moved in the meantime to the village of Etten, close to his birthplace in Zundert.
