Arles
1888 – 1889
In Provence, Vincent van Gogh painted his greatest masterpieces: sunflowers, blooming orchards, starry nights above the Rhône, late-night cafés, his bedroom and portraits of the little Arlesienne, the postman Roulin and La Berceuse. He rented the Yellow House, where he hoped to work with other artists. His dream was to establish a ‘Studio of the South’. With Theo’s support, Paul Gauguin came to Arles. Vincent decorated his room with still lifes and sunflowers. They worked for quite some time side-by-side, making portraits of each other, and Vincent also painted two chairs that symbolized their characters: a fashionable chair for Gauguin and a farmer’s stool for himself. However, their relationship went awry. After a serious argument, Vincent cut off his own ear and presented it to a local prostitute. He ended up in hospital, Gauguin left, and the inhabitants of Arles insisted that Vincent leave as well. Vincent decided to have himself voluntarily admitted to the asylum Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in nearby Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
